Portofino
Parco Naturale Regionale Di Portofino (1935) And Area Marina Protetta Di Portofino (1999); A National Park Decree Has Been Pending Since 2025 · Portofino, Liguria
A fishing village of three hundred and fifty-nine people wrapped around a horseshoe harbour on a wooded promontory east of Genoa, which somehow became one of the most expensive addresses in the Mediterranean. The houses are painted ochre and terracotta in the Ligurian way, the harbour holds fourteen quayside berths against roughly a thousand yachts that want one each summer, and about ninety thousand cruise passengers came ashore in the first nine months of 2026 alone. The result is a village that has spent years writing ordinances against its own popularity: no loitering on the waterfront, no eating in the street, no swimwear in the centre, coaches barred through the day. Above it a castle looks down the coast, a footpath runs out to the lighthouse, and around the headland lies the abbey of San Fruttuoso in a bay with no road to it, where a bronze Christ has stood on the seabed since 1954.
