Porvoo
Medieval Town With Red Riverside Storehouses And A Wooden Old Town, The Most Visited Day Trip From Helsinki · Porvoo, Uusimaa
Porvoo, Borga in Swedish, is usually described as the second-oldest town in Finland, a medieval trading place on the Porvoonjoki river about 50 km east of Helsinki. Its postcard is the row of red-ochre wooden storehouses on the riverbank, best seen from the Old Bridge, and behind them climbs a compact old town of cobbled lanes and painted wooden houses that survived when much of Finland rebuilt in stone. On the hill stands the stone cathedral, where the Diet of Porvoo met in 1809 and Finland's autonomy under the Russian tsar is traditionally dated from. The national poet J. L. Runeberg lived here, his home is a museum, and the cafes sell the Runeberg torte all year. People come for an easy half-day of wandering, cafes, chocolate and craft shops, and the riverside light in the evening. The honest caveat: Porvoo is the most popular day trip from Helsinki, so summer weekends and cruise days fill the lanes with tour groups, and the old town is small enough that it can feel crowded by early afternoon.

The old town is a living neighbourhood and open to walk at any hour, all year. Shops and cafes keep longer hours from May to August and many shorten hours or close on Mondays off season; the cathedral is usually open to visitors in the daytime but closes for services, weddings and funerals - check the current schedule. Museums such as Runeberg's Home and the Porvoo Museum have seasonal hours and are often closed on Mondays. Getting there: express buses from Helsinki Kamppi run often and take about an hour; in summer a scheduled boat sails from Helsinki in roughly three to four hours one way and should be booked ahead. Nothing in town needs booking except that summer boat and dinner tables on weekends.
