Postcards 9/11 Memorial
Memorial · Staten Island, New York
⚠ STATEN ISLAND'S MEMORIAL TO ITS OWN DEAD, on the St George waterfront facing lower Manhattan — two white wing-like forms holding granite profiles of the roughly 275 borough residents killed on 11 September 2001. ⚠ STATEN ISLAND LOST MORE PEOPLE PER CAPITA THAN ANY OTHER COMMUNITY IN AMERICA, and the memorial is aligned so that the gap in the skyline sits between the wings.
1 Bay Street, Staten Island, New York, 10301, United States
⚠ FREE, OPEN AND UNSTAFFED, fifty metres from the FREE Staten Island Ferry terminal — the entire visit from Manhattan costs nothing, and it is the most reachable significant site in the borough. Thousands of tourists ride the ferry for the Statue of Liberty view, turn round at St George and go straight back; walk fifty metres instead. ⚠ STAND BETWEEN THE WINGS AND LOOK OUT — the memorial is oriented so the gap frames lower Manhattan across the harbour, and most people photograph it from outside and miss the entire design. ⚠⚠ IT IS A PLACE OF ACTIVE MOURNING AND FAMILIES STILL COME. It is not a viewing platform or a photo stop: be quiet, do not climb on it, and do not photograph people at the plaques. ⚠ ANNUAL COMMEMORATIONS ARE HELD EACH 11 SEPTEMBER and it is not a sightseeing day. ⚠ THERE IS NO INTERPRETATION ON SITE — read about it before you come.
