Powell's City of Books

Craft Market · Portland, Oregon

A bookshop occupying an entire city block of downtown Portland, four storeys and nine colour-coded rooms, which the company describes as the largest independent new and used bookstore in the world. New and second-hand copies sit on the same shelf at different prices, which is the thing that makes it different from every other large bookshop. It opened on this site in 1971, it is still family-owned, and it is one of the few retail businesses anywhere that people plan a trip around.

1005 West Burnside Street, Portland, Oregon, 97209, United States

Open daily and LATE - well past the point at which the rest of downtown Portland has closed - including most public holidays when little else is open. It is a shop, so there is no admission and no ticket, and nobody will move you on for reading. The Rare Book Room on the third floor keeps slightly shorter hours. Author readings run most evenings and are generally free, though the largest are ticketed. Paid parking is in the garage under the building, validated with a purchase.
