Powerscourt Estate and Gardens

Eighteenth Century Palladian House With About 47 Acres Of Terraced Formal Gardens Below The Great Sugar Loaf, And Powerscourt Waterfall On The Same Estate · Enniskerry, Wicklow

Powerscourt Estate at Enniskerry, about 20 km south of Dublin at the foot of the Wicklow Mountains, is one of Ireland's great garden estates. The Wingfield family, later Viscounts Powerscourt, held it from the early 1600s, and in the 1730s and 1740s the architect Richard Castle built a Palladian mansion on the site of an older castle. Below the house, roughly 47 acres of gardens fall in grand terraces to Triton Lake, with the cone of the Great Sugar Loaf mountain framed beyond - a view often ranked among the finest garden views in the world. There is an Italian Garden, a Japanese Garden, walled gardens with long borders, the Pepperpot Tower, a pet cemetery and woodland walks. The house was gutted by fire in 1974; only part is restored and used for shops and a cafe. Powerscourt Waterfall, often called Ireland's highest, is on the same estate but about 6 km away with its own entrance and ticket. The honest caveat: this is a privately run commercial estate, not a public park, and its fame brings tour coaches and busy weekends.
