Powhatan Historic State Park

Arkansas State Park Preserving The Surviving Public Buildings Of Powhatan, A Black River Port And County Seat, Centred On The 1888 Lawrence County Courthouse And Its Intact Nineteenth Century County Records. · Powhatan, Arkansas

Powhatan was a Black River steamboat port and the seat of Lawrence County, and when the river trade died and the county seat moved it stopped almost completely. What survives is the 1888 courthouse on the hill, a jail, a schoolhouse and a couple of other public buildings, restored as a state park. The courthouse is the reason to come: its nineteenth-century county records survived essentially intact, which is rare enough that genealogists and historians come to Powhatan specifically, and the restored courtroom and offices are furnished as they were. It is a very small place in a very quiet corner of north-east Arkansas.
