Prabhupada's Palace of Gold

Temple · Moundsville, West Virginia

A gilded marble palace on a ridge above Moundsville, built between 1973 and 1979 by Hare Krishna devotees who had no construction training and taught themselves stained glass, marble cutting and gold leafing as they went. It was intended as a residence for their teacher A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who died in 1977 before it was finished, and became his memorial instead. The press of the day called it America's Taj Mahal and the name stuck.
