Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
State Park · Orick, California
Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park lies in Humboldt County near Orick, on the north coast, and forms part of the combined Redwood National and State Parks, which is a separate live row. It protects old-growth coast redwoods, a wide meadow called Elk Prairie where Roosevelt elk graze in view of the road, and a wild stretch of shoreline at Gold Bluffs Beach. The best-known stop is Fern Canyon, a narrow gorge with walls about 50 ft high covered in ferns, used as a film location for a dinosaur movie. It is reached by the unpaved Davison Road, and in summer vehicles need a day-use permit - confirm the current system. The Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway runs through the big trees, with short walks to Cathedral Trees and the Big Tree. Fog, drizzle and cool air are normal, even in July. It suits hikers, photographers and families who like quiet forest. Plan a full day, bring water shoes, and confirm fees, permits and road conditions first.

The park is open daily, with the forest, parkway and trails generally accessible from about sunrise to sunset all year - confirm current hours with California State Parks. The visitor center near Elk Prairie keeps shorter hours that vary by season, and it may close some days in the off season. Davison Road to Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon has its own rules: in summer a day-use vehicle permit has been required and sells out, while in the off season the gate may be open without one - confirm both. Winter storms and fallen trees can close roads and trails for days, and the creek crossings on Davison Road can be impassable after heavy rain. Campgrounds take reservations and fill in summer.
