Prambanan was built in the ninth century, within decades of Borobudur and a short drive away, and the two together are the argument that Java's classical period held Buddhism and Hinduism side by side rather than in sequence. It is THE LARGEST HINDU TEMPLE COMPLEX IN INDONESIA: three tall temples for Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, three facing them for their mounts, and the remains of more than two hundred smaller shrines around them. The inner walls carry the RAMAYANA in relief, and the same story is danced in the open air beside the temples on summer evenings with the stone lit behind. A 2006 EARTHQUAKE did serious damage and restoration continues, which is why some chambers are scaffolded or shut on any given day and why the ticket office is the only reliable source on what is open.
