National Historic Site, Designated 2010. The 1917 House In Hope Where William Jefferson Clinton Lived With His Maternal Grandparents For The First Four Years Of His Life, Restored To Its Late 1940s Appearance. · Hope, Arkansas

Bill Clinton's father died in a car accident three months before he was born, and his mother left for New Orleans to train as a nurse anaesthetist, so the first four years of his life were spent in this two-storey house in Hope with his grandparents Eldridge and Edith Cassidy. The grandfather ran a small grocery in a Black neighbourhood during segregation and extended credit to customers other shops would not serve, which Clinton has spent his career citing as where he learned what he learned. The house was built in 1917, was restored by a local foundation, and became a National Historic Site in 2010 - while its subject was still alive, which is rare. It is small, it is free, and it takes an hour, and the rangers spend it on the grandparents rather than on the presidency, which is the right decision. Hope itself is a town of about ten thousand that has produced two Arkansas governors and once grew the largest watermelon ever recorded.

117 South Hervey Street, Hope, Arkansas, 71801, United States

Open most days of the year on daytime hours, closed on major holidays and on a fixed weekday in some seasons. Admission is free. The house can only be seen on a ranger-guided tour, which departs at regular intervals through the day, typically every half hour, with the last departing well before closing. The visitor centre, the exhibits and the gift shop can be seen without a tour. Confirm the day's tour times before driving - Hope is a long way from anywhere else on an Arkansas itinerary.
