Presqu'ile Provincial Park
A Sandy Peninsula Park On Lake Ontario With A Long Beach, A Marsh Boardwalk, The 1840 Lighthouse, Migratory Birds And Butterflies And A Big Campground. One Of Ontario'S Best Birdwatching Places In Spring And Autumn, Near Brighton And Cobourg · Brighton, Ontario
Presquile Provincial Park is a sandy peninsula that reaches into Lake Ontario at Brighton, roughly 130 km east of Toronto and a short drive south of Highway 401 (confirm distances). The name is French for almost an island, and the park mixes long beaches, a cattail marsh with a boardwalk, cedar and pine woodland and a limestone point topped by a white lighthouse dating from about 1840 (confirm the date). The peninsula sits on a busy bird flyway, so spring and autumn bring waves of warblers, ducks, shorebirds and migrating monarch butterflies, and it is counted among the best birdwatching places in Ontario. A large campground, a visitor centre with natural history displays, walking and cycling trails and a sandy swimming beach make it a full family destination in summer. Winters are quiet, with snowshoeing and ducks on the open bay. A vehicle permit is needed for day use, and camping is reserved through Ontario Parks (confirm all prices).

Presquile is open all year for day use, but the visitor centre, lighthouse displays, beach facilities and summer programs generally run from about May to early October, so confirm dates with Ontario Parks before a spring or autumn trip. The gate is usually staffed in the daytime, and campers follow set arrival and departure times (confirm). Some roads and the campground close for winter, while trails stay open for walking, snowshoeing and skiing when snow allows. Beaches are not supervised by lifeguards in most cases, and the busiest summer weekends can fill the day-use car parks early.
