Prince Edward Island and Green Gables
Province / PEI National Park / Green Gables Heritage Place · Cavendish, Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province, a gentle island of red farm fields, sandstone cliffs and long red-sand beaches in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Most visitors come for the north shore around Cavendish, where Green Gables Heritage Place, run by Parks Canada, preserves the farmhouse that inspired L.M. Montgomery's 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables, and where Prince Edward Island National Park holds dunes, beaches and shore trails. It suits families, cyclists, Anne readers and slow road-trippers. The island is about 250 km long but narrow, so everything is a short drive. Arrive over the 13 km Confederation Bridge, which charges its toll only when you leave, or by seasonal ferry. Be honest about the trade-off: Cavendish is crowded and commercial in July and August, and many attractions close after Labour Day. Allow three to five days, longer with a bike. Charlottetown is a separate listing. Confirm seasons and fees.

Green Gables Heritage Place and most national park services run seasonally, usually from late spring to October, with the longest hours in July and August. Exact dates, daily hours and admission change by year, so confirm with Parks Canada before you plan around them. Park beaches and trails can be walked outside the season, but washrooms, lifeguards and parking services may not be running. Many island attractions, shops and restaurants close from mid-October to May. The Confederation Bridge is open all year, though high wind can restrict some vehicles, and ferry sailings run in the warm months only. Always check current closures for dune and cliff trails.
