Prince Rupert and the Museum of Northern British Columbia
A Rainy Northern Port With The Museum Of Northern British Columbia On Tsimshian Art And Coastal History, The Historic Cow Bay Waterfront, The North Pacific Cannery Site And Ferries To Haida Gwaii And Alaska. The Gateway To The Skeena And The Coast · Prince Rupert, British Columbia
Prince Rupert is a rainy port city on the north coast of British Columbia, set on Kaien Island at the mouth of the Skeena River, about 750 km north-west of Prince George. It was planned in the early 1900s as the western end of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, and it sits within the traditional territory of the Coast Tsimshian, whose village sites around the harbour date back some five thousand years or more. The Museum of Northern British Columbia, built in the style of a longhouse, is the best place to start, with Tsimshian masks, carvings, argillite, archaeology of the harbour and the story of the railway, fishing and canning that followed. Outside the museum the Cow Bay waterfront, the North Pacific Cannery site in Port Edward and the ferry terminals for Haida Gwaii and Alaska make the city a gateway to the coast. Rain is frequent and heavy, but the green forest and the sea life reward patient travellers.

Summer tours, such as whale and grizzly viewing, run on their own seasons, and the North Pacific Cannery site is a seasonal attraction with its own hours. Ferry sailings to Haida Gwaii and Alaska follow timetables that change by season, so confirm departure days and boarding times, and expect rain.
