Providence Canyon State Park
Georgia State Park · Lumpkin, Georgia
A thousand acres of canyon in south-west Georgia, up to 150 feet deep, banded in orange, pink, white and purple sand — and entirely man-made. Nineteenth-century farmers ploughed the soft coastal-plain soil without contouring it, water found the furrows, and within a few decades the gullies had eaten the fields. What was an agricultural catastrophe is now called Georgia's Little Grand Canyon and is one of the state's seven natural wonders, which is a description the park itself notes is not quite accurate. The rare plumleaf azalea grows on the rim.
8930 Canyon Road, Lumpkin, Georgia, 31815, United States
Open daily year round, generally 7 AM to sunset, with a Georgia ParkPass required per vehicle. The visitor centre keeps shorter hours and is closed some weekdays out of season. The canyon floor route runs through sand and shallow water and floods after heavy rain.
