Pu Luong Nature Reserve

A Quiet Nature Reserve Of Rice Terraces, Stilt House Thai Villages, Bamboo Waterwheels And Forested Ridges, A Gentler Alternative To Sapa And Mu Cang Chai. Terraces Are Green In June And July And Golden From September To October. Trekking And Homestays Only, With A Few Basic Roads In · Ba Thuoc, Thanh Hoa

Pu Luong Nature Reserve lies in Thanh Hoa province, about 160 km south-west of Hanoi, between Mai Chau and Ba Thuoc. It is a quiet area of rice terraces, forested ridges and Thai and Muong villages built on stilts, a gentler and less crowded alternative to Sapa and Mu Cang Chai. The terraces turn green in June and July, when the rice is growing, and golden from September to October, near harvest. Bamboo water wheels turn in the streams and feed the fields. The main activity is walking, such as the classic trek between Pu Luong and Kho Muong, and sleeping in family-run stilt-house homestays. Mai Chau is a separate area and appears only in nearby. Roads in are narrow and rough, so most people come by motorbike or private car, and the facilities are basic: simple rooms, shared bathrooms in some homestays, patchy signal and few shops. Rain makes tracks slippery, and leeches appear in the wet season. It is a place for slow walking and village stays, not for sights to tick off.

The reserve and villages are open all day and night, with no main gate. Trekking is a daylight activity, and guides commonly start in the morning and aim to finish before dusk. Homestays serve dinner in the early evening and often switch off lights late. There are no fixed opening hours for a visitor centre, and any reserve office or ticket point keeps daytime hours and may be CLOSED when staff are away. Walking the paths and villages is FREE, but guides, homestays and meals cost money. Tet may close small shops for days.
