Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

National Monument · Honaunau, Hawaii

A place of refuge on the west coast of Hawaiʻi Island, where until the early nineteenth century a Hawaiian who had broken a kapu could escape certain death by reaching this ground. The offender was absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants sheltered here in wartime too. The Great Wall, built without mortar and in places over three metres thick, encloses the puʻuhonua, and the land just outside it was home to several generations of powerful chiefs.
