Puerto Varas and Volcan Osorno
A German Settled Lake Town On Lago Llanquihue Facing The Perfect Snow Cone Of Volcan Osorno; Gateway To Vicente Perez Rosales, Chile'S Oldest National Park · Puerto Varas, Los Lagos
Puerto Varas is a small, neat lake town settled by German immigrants in the 1850s, with timber houses, rose gardens, kuchen in the cafes and a view that makes it famous: across the wide blue water of Lago Llanquihue stands Volcan Osorno, an almost perfect cone of snow, with the jagged Calbuco beside it. It is the base for the southern lake district. A road climbs the flank of Osorno to a ski and viewing area with wide views over the lakes, and guided climbers go on to the summit. Beyond lies Vicente Perez Rosales, Chile's oldest national park, with the Saltos del Petrohue, falls of turquoise water over black volcanic rock, and the emerald Lago Todos los Santos, where the Cruce Andino boat-and-bus crossing to Bariloche in Argentina begins. Around the lake are the German-flavoured town of Frutillar with its modern concert hall, rivers for rafting and fishing, and hot springs. Puerto Montt, the regional hub with an airport, is twenty minutes away, and Chiloe is an easy trip south.
