National Monument · Chicago, Illinois
A unique 13-acre urban park on Chicago's South Side preserving America's first planned industrial community, built by railroad car magnate George Pullman in 1880-1884. The town was the site of the famous 1894 Pullman Strike that led to the creation of Labor Day, and later became home to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters — the first African American labor union. The historic Pullman factory clock tower, Hotel Florence, and worker row houses are all preserved.
