Puy du Fou
History Theme Park In The VendéE, Opened 1989 Around Large Scale Historical Shows And The CinéScéNie Night Spectacle First Staged In 1978; Often Voted Among The Best Theme Parks In The World · Les Epesses, Pays de la Loire
Puy du Fou is a history theme park in the green farmland of the Vendée, in western France, and it works differently from most parks: there are almost no rides, and the day is built around large live shows. It grew out of the Cinéscénie, a night spectacle first staged in 1978 by volunteers from the surrounding villages in front of a ruined Renaissance château, and the daytime park opened in 1989. The big shows recreate episodes of French and European history with hundreds of performers, horses, birds and stage machinery: a Roman stadium with chariot races, a Viking raid on a village, knights and a medieval tournament, and a show of birds of prey swooping low over the crowd. Between them are reconstructed villages, gardens and craftspeople. Most shows are in French, with a translation app or audio system for other languages. The park is seasonal, and the Cinéscénie runs only on set evenings with its own ticket. It is about four hours from Paris by car, and many visitors stay two days in one of the themed hotels.

Puy du Fou is a seasonal park. It usually opens in spring, around April, and runs to early November, with a separate Christmas period in December that has its own programme; it is closed for the rest of the winter, so confirm the season dates before booking anything. Within the season the park is not open every day in the quieter months, and some weekdays in spring and autumn are closed, while summer runs daily. Opening hours stretch later in summer, when an evening lake show is added on many nights. Each big show runs only a few times a day at fixed times printed on the daily programme and in the app, and doors close shortly before the start, so the real timetable of your day is the show schedule, not the gate hours. The Cinéscénie night spectacle runs only on selected evenings, mostly Friday and Saturday from about June to September, needs its own ticket and sells out months ahead on popular dates. Themed hotels book out early for summer weekends. Some shows can pause in heavy rain or strong wind.
