Pyha-Luosto National Park and the Amethyst Mine

National Park Of Old Growth Forest And The Southernmost Fells Of Lapland, With An Amethyst Mine Visitors Can Dig In · Pelkosenniemi, Lapland

Pyha-Luosto is a long chain of old fells in southern Lapland, protected as a national park in 2005 when the older Pyhatunturi park (one of Finland's first, from 1938) was joined with the Luosto area. The fells are the southernmost true fells of Lapland, worn-down quartzite ridges with bare stony tops, deep gorges and old-growth spruce and pine forest on the slopes, where the trees are often said to be several hundred years old. A ski resort sits at each end: Pyha in the north-east and Luosto in the south-west, roughly 25-30 km apart by road, with a marked trail along the ridge between them. Two things make the park unusual: the Isokuru gorge, often described as the deepest in Finnish Lapland, and the Lampivaara amethyst mine on a fell near Luosto, where visitors can dig in the waste rock and keep a small stone. People come for skiing and snowshoeing in winter, ruska colours in September and easy fell walks in summer. The honest caveat: this is gentle fell country, not mountains, and the mine is a guided tourist visit, not a treasure hunt - your stone will be small.

The park itself is open year round with free access. The Naturum visitor centre at Pyha is generally open daily in the main winter and ruska seasons with shorter hours and some closed days in the quiet late autumn and early summer - check the current schedule. The Lampivaara amethyst mine runs guided visits: in summer and autumn you walk up from the Ukkohalla area near Luosto (about 2.5 km each way, confirm), in winter access is typically by snowmobile-pulled sleigh, snowshoes or skis, so confirm the current arrangements; tours run on set days and times and are usually closed in the slush seasons of late spring and late autumn. Book the mine tour and any sleigh transfer ahead in peak weeks. Reach the area by car or bus from Rovaniemi (about 1.5-2 hours) or from Kemijarvi station, where the night train from Helsinki often terminates in season.
