Qargha Reservoir
Lake · Kabul, Kabul
Kabul's lake: a reservoir created in the 1930s by damming the Paghman River about nine kilometres west of the city, ringed by bare hills and given over almost entirely to leisure — pedal boats, horse rides, lakeside kebab restaurants and the massed picnics of Kabuli families on Thursdays and Fridays. Blue water against brown mountains, it is the capital's standing answer to a day off, busiest from March to October, and reporting rising visitor numbers with rising water levels as of 2024. Since November 2022, Afghan women have been barred from Kabul's recreation areas.
