Quabbin Reservoir
Lake · Belchertown, Massachusetts
Thirty-nine square miles of water in central Massachusetts, made between 1930 and 1939 by damming the Swift River — and made by disincorporating four entire towns, Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott, moving around two thousand five hundred people out and relocating their cemeteries. It supplies Boston's drinking water sixty-five miles east. Because it is a water supply there is no swimming and no body contact anywhere, which is exactly why the shoreline is empty, the forest around it is huge and the bald eagles came back.
485 Ware Road, Belchertown, Massachusetts, 01007, United States
FREE and open daily, though the park road, the lookouts and the numbered access gates keep their own seasonal hours and some close — check before driving out. NO SWIMMING, WADING OR BODY CONTACT ANYWHERE: it is Boston's unfiltered drinking water supply and the prohibition is patrolled and enforced. Fishing and boating are permit-controlled and seasonal, with large areas closed to boats. Hunting is permitted in parts of the watershed in season.
