Quebrada del Condorito National Park

National Park Created 1996 On The Pampa De Achala, Protecting An 800 Metre Deep Gorge Where Andean Condors Nest And Train Their Young · Villa Carlos Paz, Cordoba

Quebrada del Condorito is a national park high on the Pampa de Achala, a granite plateau at around two thousand metres in the Sierras de Cordoba, and its centre is a gorge some eight hundred metres deep where Andean condors nest on the cliffs and teach their young to fly. It is one of the most reliable and accessible places to see condors in the country, far east of the Andes. The standard visit is a walk across the high grassland from the La Pampilla trailhead on the Altas Cumbres road, about ninety minutes from Cordoba city, to the Balcon Norte, a viewpoint on the rim, where condors ride the updrafts at eye level or below. The hike is roughly three to four hours each way, across streams and granite outcrops, with no shade and weather that turns quickly from bright sun to thick fog. The plateau is also home to plants and animals found nowhere else, isolated here since the ice ages. It is quiet, cheap and well organised, and most visitors are from Cordoba itself, but anyone who wants condors without going to the Andes should come.
