Quechee Gorge

Gorge · White River Junction, Vermont

A hundred and sixty-five feet of rock wall on the Ottauquechee River, the deepest gorge in Vermont, and the US Route 4 bridge that crosses it is why most people ever see it - you park at the state park and walk out onto the span. It was cut fast rather than slowly: about thirteen thousand years ago, as the Laurentide Ice Sheet retreated and glacial Lake Hitchcock drained, the river sawed straight down through the bedrock of the Gile Mountain Formation. The whitewater below is a well-known kayak run and the rim trails on both sides are short.

5800 Woodstock Road, White River Junction, Vermont, 05001, United States

The US Route 4 bridge over the gorge is a public road with a footway, open at all times and FREE - the famous view costs nothing and needs no ticket. ⚠ QUECHEE STATE PARK, which provides the car park, the campground, the trails and the restrooms, IS SEASONAL and charges a Vermont state park day-use vehicle fee; it runs roughly late May to mid October with camping reserved through the state park service. Foliage weekends book ahead and US-4 backs up in the first half of October. ⚠ THE WHITEWATER RUN THROUGH THE GORGE IS FOR EXPERIENCED KAYAKERS ONLY and there is no casual river access from the bridge. Do not enter the water in the gorge.
