Quinta Mazatlán

Nature Preserve · McAllen, Texas

A 1930s Spanish Revival adobe mansion in the middle of McAllen, surrounded by twenty-odd acres of restored Tamaulipan thornforest and run as an urban birding centre — one of the nine sites of the World Birding Center. It is the improbable combination of a grand house, a rare habitat and a city block, and the green jays come to the feeders regardless.

600 Sunset Drive, McAllen, Texas, 78504, United States

⚠ ADMISSION AND HOURS ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check quintamazatlan.com or the City of McAllen before travelling, and ⚠ ASK ABOUT EVENING PROGRAMMING, since the mansion hosts talks and events outside ordinary hours. One of the nine World Birding Center sites. ⚠ Sit at the feeders near the entrance — that is where the green jays, chachalacas and orioles come, and it is the easiest close-range Valley birding there is.
