Ralph Engelstad Arena
Arena · Grand Forks, North Dakota
A college ice hockey arena in Grand Forks that cost more than a hundred million dollars of one man's money and is routinely called the finest facility of its kind anywhere. Ralph Engelstad, a Las Vegas casino owner and former University of North Dakota goaltender, paid for it and specified the details: granite and marble concourses, leather seats, cherry wood, and the university's Fighting Sioux logo set into the floors and walls thousands of times. The logo was retired in 2012 after a long and bitter fight; the building it is embedded in was not.

Event-driven rather than open to the public on a daily basis. University of North Dakota men's ice hockey runs roughly October to March, with home weekends usually Friday and Saturday; concerts, community skating and youth tournaments fill the rest of the calendar. ⚠ BUILDING TOURS ARE BY ARRANGEMENT and depend on what is happening on the ice - ring rather than turning up. Tickets for big home weekends sell out well in advance and the hotels in Grand Forks go with them.
