Rama Meadows
Alpine Meadow And Forest Below The Eastern Flanks Of Nanga Parbat In The Astore Valley · Astore, Gilgit-Baltistan
Rama is a broad alpine meadow ringed by pine forest above the town of Astore, at around 3,300 metres, with the eastern flanks of Nanga Parbat and its glaciers rising at the head of the valley. It is one of the most beautiful and least crowded meadows in the Nanga Parbat region, the quiet alternative to Fairy Meadows on the other side of the mountain. A jeep road climbs from Astore through the forest to the meadow, where there is a simple rest house and space to camp, and a walk of a few hours leads further up to Rama Lake, a small glacial lake below the ice. In summer herders bring their animals up, and the meadow fills with flowers. The Astore valley is also the route to Deosai from the west and to the Rupal valley below the vast Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat, so Rama fits into a longer circuit. It is reached from the Karakoram Highway at the Astore turn-off, and the roads are rough. It is a place for people who want the mountain without the crowds.
