Ratargul Swamp Forest

Nature Preserve · Gowainghat, Sylhet

A freshwater swamp forest on the Goain river north of Sylhet city where, for half the year, the trees stand in several metres of water and the only way through is by hand-paddled country boat. Koroch trees dominate, their canopies closing overhead as boatmen pole through green corridors of trunk and reflection. One of very few swamp forests in Bangladesh and the only one developed for visitors, Ratargul in full monsoon flood is a genuinely singular boat ride; in the dry season the water withdraws and the forest becomes an ordinary walk - hence the seasonal flag.

Ratargul Ghat, Gowainghat, Sylhet, Bangladesh

Boats run daylight hours from Ratargul Ghat, weather permitting, with the season effectively July-October at monsoon flood - outside those months the water withdraws and the signature boat ride disappears (dry-season walking is possible but a different visit). Ghat entry fee and boat hire paid on site; no advance booking system.
