A Short Day Out Of Aguascalientes City, Calm And Little Visited Outside Weekends · Real de Asientos, Aguascalientes
Real de Asientos is a quiet colonial silver-mining town about 45 km north-east of Aguascalientes city, and it was the first Pueblo Magico of the state. Spanish prospectors opened the mines here in the 1500s, and the town kept its stone churches, a main plaza and old mine buildings after the silver faded. The parish church and the Templo del Senor del Salitre are the main sights, along with a small mining museum and walks past old stone houses. Local sweets such as cajeta and fruit pastes are sold around the plaza, and the town holds a fair each March. Real de Asientos suits history lovers, photographers and families who want a calm day out of Aguascalientes. It is worth a half day by bus or car, especially at fair time. It is not worth a long journey for those who want nightlife, big monuments or a dense set of museums. The streets are quiet and hot at midday, so plan around the sun, and expect most shops to close early on weekdays.
