Rebild Bakker and Rold Skov
Heather Hills And Denmark'S Largest Forest, Rold Skov, With Clear Springs And The Rebild Hills, Known For The Fourth Of July Festival Held There Since 1912 By Danish Americans · Rebild, North Denmark Region
Rebild Bakker and Rold Skov lie together in the hills between Aalborg and Hobro in North Jutland. Rebild Bakker is an area of open heather-covered hills and steep dry valleys, bought by Danish-Americans and given to the Danish state in the early 1900s on the condition that emigrants could meet there; since 1912 the Rebildfesten, a Fourth of July festival celebrating Danish-American friendship, has been held in the natural amphitheatre of the hills, often with American and Danish royal or political guests. Around the hills spreads Rold Skov, usually described as Denmark's largest forest, a mix of beech, oak and conifer woodland with clear springs such as Lille Blaakilde, where cold groundwater wells up and is said never to freeze. People come to walk the heather ridges and forest trails, to ride the mountain-bike routes, to see the springs and the emigrant log cabin, and to enjoy some of the hilliest, most varied scenery in a very flat country. The honest caveat: these are gentle hills, not mountains, and on the festival day and summer weekends the Rebild car parks are full.
