Reconstruction Era National Historical Park

National Historical Park · Beaufort, South Carolina

The only unit in the entire National Park System dedicated to Reconstruction, designated in 2017 — a hundred and fifty years after the period it commemorates, and after decades in which the federal government interpreted the Civil War at dozens of sites and its aftermath at none. It is in four places around Beaufort and St. Helena Island, because that is where the Port Royal Experiment happened: land redistributed, schools opened and self-government attempted from 1862, while the war was still being fought.

706 Craven Street, Beaufort, South Carolina, 29902, United States

FREE. ⚠ THIS IS A NEW, SMALL AND LIGHTLY STAFFED PARK IN FOUR SEPARATE PLACES and its hours are the most fragile thing in this folder. The visitor centre in the old Beaufort Firehouse on Craven Street keeps daytime hours on a REDUCED WEEK; Darrah Hall and the Brick Baptist Church at Penn Center on St. Helena Island and Camp Saxton at Port Royal have LIMITED AND VARIABLE ACCESS, and some are open only for programmes. VERIFY EVERY SITE BEFORE TRAVELLING — do not assume the four are open on the same day, or at all.
