Red Butte Garden and Arboretum
State Arboretum Of Utah · Salt Lake City, Utah
Over a hundred acres in the foothills above the University of Utah, of which about twenty-one are display gardens and the rest is native vegetation crossed by several miles of trail. It is operated by the university and is the State Arboretum of Utah, a designation the legislature made in 1961. Red Butte Creek runs through the northern end. It draws around two hundred thousand visitors a year, a good share of them for the summer concert series in its outdoor amphitheatre rather than for the plants.

⚠ ADMISSION AND HOURS WERE NOT VERIFIED FROM THE GARDEN'S OWN PAGE FOR THIS ROW — check redbuttegarden.org before travelling. Expect modest admission with reductions for children and seniors, and free entry for members and University of Utah students. The garden is open year round. It covers over 100 acres of which about 21 are display gardens, the remainder being native foothill vegetation crossed by several miles of unimproved trail. ⚠ THE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE RUNS A MAJOR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES that is separately ticketed, sells out, and completely changes parking, access and atmosphere on gig nights — check the concert calendar against your date. The orangerie is a modest glasshouse rather than a large tropical conservatory, so a winter visit is structural rather than horticultural.
