Red River Gorge Geological Area

National Geological Area — Daniel Boone National Forest · Stanton, Kentucky

A canyon system inside Daniel Boone National Forest holding more than a hundred natural sandstone arches, the greatest concentration east of the Rocky Mountains, along with cliff lines that have made it one of the two or three most important sport climbing destinations in the world. The Red River itself runs through it as a National Wild and Scenic River. Climbers fly in from Europe and Japan for the autumn season, and everyone else comes for the arches, the overlooks and a road tunnel barely wider than a car.
