A juke joint on Sunflower Avenue in Clarksdale, run for decades by Red Paden, and one of the last places on earth where Delta blues is played the way it was played before anybody was watching. It is a small dark room with mismatched chairs, a space heater, Christmas lights and a PA held together by conviction. There is no schedule you can rely on, the hours are whatever Red decides, and when it is open and somebody is playing there is nothing else like it anywhere.

A juke joint with NO RELIABLE SCHEDULE. It opens when it opens — most dependably on Friday and Saturday nights, generally late — and may be closed with no notice or announcement. There is no advance booking. A small CASH cover is taken at the door and there is no reason to assume cards work. Ask locally on the day whether it is open. The Juke Joint Festival in April is the busiest weekend of the Clarksdale year.
