Redwood National and State Parks

National Park · Crescent City, California

Redwood National and State Parks is a partnership of the National Park Service and California State Parks along the far northern California coast, near Crescent City and Orick. It combines Redwood National Park with Prairie Creek Redwoods, Jedediah Smith Redwoods and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Parks, and together they protect a large share of the remaining old growth coast redwood forest, among the tallest trees on Earth. The forest is cool, dim and wet, with fog and drizzle common even in summer, and the Pacific beaches are cold and rough rather than swimmable. Highway 101 and the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway run through the groves, but the sites are spread across roughly 50 miles, cell signal is poor, and Fern Canyon and Tall Trees Grove can need permits. Plan at least two days, bring layers and a full tank of gas, and confirm fees, permits and road status before you leave. Visitors who want only a short stop can still walk a groomed old growth loop beside the highway in under an hour.

The parks themselves are open around the clock all year, and most trails, groves and beaches have no gate. Visitor centers, such as the ones near Orick, Crescent City and Prairie Creek, keep daytime hours that shorten in winter and may close on some weekdays, so confirm before relying on one for maps or permits. Fern Canyon is reached by a gravel road that is sometimes gated or run on a day-use permit in busy seasons, and the Tall Trees Grove access gate also works on a permit with a daily limit - confirm both. Unpaved routes such as Howland Hill Road can close after storms, and campgrounds and some roads change with the season.
