Reelfoot Lake State Park
Tennessee State Park · Tiptonville, Tennessee
A 15,000-acre lake in the far northwest corner of Tennessee that did not exist before the winter of 1811-12, when the New Madrid earthquakes dropped the land and the Mississippi ran backwards into the hollow. The drowned forest is still standing: bald cypress in open water, knees breaking the surface, the whole lake shallow enough to pole a boat across. It carries one of the strongest wintering concentrations of bald eagles in the interior United States, and the park runs guided eagle tours from December to March.
2595 Highway 21 East, Tiptonville, Tennessee, 38079, United States
Park open daily year round, free. Visitor centre keeps seasonal hours. Scenic pontoon boat tours run in the warmer months and guided bald eagle tours in January and February, both ticketed, scheduled and booked ahead.
