Reiman Gardens
Botanical Garden · Ames, Iowa
Seventeen acres of public garden on the southern edge of the Iowa State University campus in Ames, immediately south of Jack Trice Stadium, opened in September 1995. Its centrepiece is the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing, a 2,500-square-foot indoor tropical glasshouse holding up to eight hundred live butterflies and moths across as many as eighty species — which makes it the one garden in Iowa that is worth visiting in February as well as June.
1407 Elwood Drive, Ames, Iowa, 50011, United States
Open seven days a week, generally 10:00 to 16:30 with extended summer hours, and closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day — unusually reliable for Iowa. An admission fee is charged, modest and typically about $10-$15 for an adult with reductions for children and seniors; members enter free and ⚠ IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND THEIR CLASSES ARE ADMITTED FREE OF CHARGE. ⚠ THE CHRISTINA REIMAN BUTTERFLY WING IS AN INDOOR TROPICAL GLASSHOUSE OPEN YEAR ROUND, holding up to 800 live butterflies and moths — which makes this the one garden in Iowa worth visiting in January. It is hot and very humid inside and fogs glasses and camera lenses immediately. ⚠ THE GARDEN SITS IMMEDIATELY SOUTH OF JACK TRICE STADIUM and parking and access change completely on home football days — check before travelling on an autumn Saturday.
