Resolute (Qausuittuq)

A Small Inuit Hamlet Founded In 1953 When Families Were Relocated To The High Arctic, And A Staging Post For Expeditions To The North Magnetic Pole, Ellesmere And Axel Heiberg Islands And Arctic Ocean Ski Journeys. The Windswept Gravel Town Has Almost No Tourist Infrastructure Beyond A Few Lodges And An Airline Gateway, And Arrivals Are Normally On Arranged Expeditions · Resolute, Nunavut

Resolute, Qausuittuq in Inuktitut, meaning a place with no dawn, is one of the northernmost civilian communities in Canada, on the south coast of Cornwallis Island in the High Arctic. It was founded in 1953, when the government moved Inuit families from northern Quebec and from Pond Inlet to Resolute and Grise Fiord, an experience of hardship and separation that the community and the country now recognise. The windswept gravel town has an airport that serves as a staging point for expeditions to Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg islands and Arctic Ocean ski journeys, and a research base for scientists. There is almost no tourist infrastructure beyond a few lodges. It is not a sightseeing town: a walk takes you around it in an hour, and arrivals are normally on arranged expeditions. It suits expedition travellers, researchers and people already in the north. Flights come from Iqaluit or Yellowknife and commonly cost CAD 2,000-4,500 return, so confirm fares first.

Resolute has no visitor hours: the airport, hamlet office, co-op store and lodges keep local hours that you should confirm, with closures on Sundays and holidays. Expedition trips run mainly from about March to May for polar travel and about July to August for open-water or air trips, with a long polar night from roughly late October to mid February when travel is limited. Walking the streets and shore is free at any hour, but cold and wind can make it unpleasant. Outfitters and flights depend on weather, so schedules shift without notice. From late April to August the sun does not set; in winter the sun stays below the horizon for months.
