Rhode Island State House

Historic Site · Providence, Rhode Island

The state capitol, built between 1891 and 1901 by McKim, Mead & White — the same firm that designed the Newport Casino now holding the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Its white Georgia marble dome is described as the fourth largest self-supported marble dome in the world, and it stands on a rise above downtown where it is visible from most of the city. Inside are a Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington, the Gettysburg Gun, and the original 1663 Royal Charter that guaranteed liberty of conscience in the colony.

FREE, with free parking on site. ⚠ IT IS A WORKING SEAT OF GOVERNMENT AND OPENS ON STATE BUSINESS HOURS — broadly weekdays during office hours, CLOSED AT WEEKENDS and on state holidays, which is the reverse of every other attraction in this folder and the reason most visitors never get inside. Access can be restricted without notice during legislative sessions and official ceremonies. Security screening applies at the entrance. Free guided tours are offered on weekdays, generally by prior arrangement rather than on demand — book ahead, because walk-up availability is unreliable. The 1663 Royal Charter, the Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington and the Gettysburg Gun are on permanent display.
