Rickwood Field

National Register Of Historic Places · Birmingham, Alabama

The oldest professional baseball park in America, opened in 1910 — two years before Fenway and four before Wrigley — and still standing in west Birmingham with its 1920s grandstand, hand-operated scoreboard and outfield advertising. It was home to the Birmingham Barons and to the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro leagues, which means Willie Mays played here as a teenager, and Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson and Cool Papa Bell all appeared on this field. Major League Baseball played a regular-season game on it in 2024.

1137 2nd Avenue West, Birmingham, Alabama, 35204, United States

Not a conventional attraction. Generally open free for self-guided visits on weekdays when staff are present, and closed a good deal of the time — RING AHEAD before driving out. Hosts amateur and college games and the annual Rickwood Classic, which is ticketed.
