Riggins

Resort Area · Riggins, Idaho

A town of three hundred and seventy-two people at the bottom of a canyon where the Little Salmon runs into the Salmon, on US-95 a hundred and fifty miles north of Boise. It calls itself Idaho's Whitewater Capital and the claim is fair: almost every commercial rafting and jet boat operation on the Main Salmon works out of here, and the town exists to put people on the river and take them off it again. It also sits on a time zone line - Riggins is the last Mountain time town going north on this highway, and Pacific begins just past it.

South Main Street, Riggins, Idaho, 83549, United States

The town is open at all times and free. ⚠ THE TIME ZONE CHANGES JUST NORTH OF TOWN - Riggins is in MOUNTAIN time and PACIFIC begins a few miles up US-95, which causes missed shuttle and flight connections every season. COMMERCIAL RAFTING AND JET BOAT OPERATORS RUN ROUGHLY LATE APRIL TO SEPTEMBER, with the biggest water from late May into early July, and they SELL OUT FOR JUNE AND JULY MONTHS AHEAD - book the trip before the bed. Steelhead seasons run in autumn and spring under Idaho Fish and Game rules. Most river businesses close or reduce hard in winter. ⚠ SERVICES ARE THIN: this is a town of 372 people with limited fuel, no substantial supermarket and no late food. The Riggins Rodeo in early May fills every bed for thirty miles.
