Ringkobing Fjord and Hvide Sande
Fishing Town On The Dune Barrier Between Ringkobing Fjord And The North Sea, One Of Europe'S Big Windsurfing And Kitesurfing Spots, With A Fish Auction And Wide Beaches · Hvide Sande, Central Denmark Region
Hvide Sande is a working fishing town on Holmsland Klit, the narrow dune barrier that separates the large, shallow Ringkobing Fjord from the North Sea on the west coast of Jutland. The town exists because of a channel and lock, built in the early 1930s, that let fjord water out to the sea and gave fishermen a harbour on this otherwise harbourless coast. Today it is several things at once: a busy fishing port with an early-morning fish auction, smokehouses and fish shops; one of Europe's best-known windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, because the shallow fjord gives flat water and the North Sea gives waves on the same day; and a base for long white beaches, dunes, cycling along the barrier, and holiday houses. Nearby are the Lyngvig lighthouse, Ringkobing town and the bird reserves at the south end of the fjord. The honest caveat: this is exposed coast where wind is constant and summer can be cool and grey, the town itself is functional rather than pretty, and the North Sea and harbour mouth are genuinely dangerous for swimmers.
Hvide Sande on the Holmsland Klit barrier, between Ringkobing Fjord and the North Sea, Hvide Sande, Central Denmark Region, Denmark
Hvide Sande is an open town with no gate or ticket; beaches, harbour and dune paths are open all year. The fish auction runs on weekday mornings, very early, and depends on catches - confirm the current pattern. Shops, cafes and water sports schools are busiest from roughly Easter to October, with many reduced or closed in winter. From Copenhagen by train go towards Fredericia and change for Skjern or Ringkobing (roughly 3.5-4 hours), then take a regional bus along the barrier to Hvide Sande, roughly 20-40 minutes; by car it is roughly 3.5-4 hours via the Great Belt bridge (toll). Book summer holiday houses and surf courses well ahead.
