RISD Museum
Art Museum · Providence, Rhode Island
The art museum of the Rhode Island School of Design, founded in 1877 and holding roughly a hundred thousand objects — the twentieth-largest art museum in the United States by its own account, sitting on the slope of College Hill in downtown Providence. It is a teaching museum attached to an art school, which shows in what it collects: costume and textiles, design objects and prints alongside the paintings. Its two most remarkable holdings are the largest historic Japanese wooden sculpture in the country and the coffin and mummy of an Egyptian priest.
