Rissers Beach Provincial Park

A Park With A Long White Sand Beach, A Salt Marsh Boardwalk, Dunes, A Campground And A Lagoon, On The Atlantic Coast Of The South Shore. One Of Nova Scotia'S Best Beaches, With Cool Water And Summer Crowds · Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia

Rissers Beach Provincial Park lies on the Atlantic coast of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, near the village of Petite Riviere on Highway 331, roughly 25 km south-east of Bridgewater and about 30 km from the old port of Lunenburg (confirm the distances). A long crescent of pale sand faces the open ocean, backed by low dunes, a salt marsh and a freshwater lagoon, and a boardwalk carries walkers over the wet ground without harming the plants. The park has a large wooded campground, a day-use area with picnic tables and a changing building, and short trails that reach the marsh and both ends of the beach. It is one of the best known beaches on the South Shore, yet the Atlantic stays cold even in August, so many visitors paddle, walk and watch the surf rather than swim for long. Piping plovers may nest on parts of the sand in late spring and summer, and those sections are roped off (confirm). Fog is common and weekends in July and August are busy.

The park is run as a seasonal provincial park, with the campground, gatehouse, washrooms and supervised day-use area normally open from about mid May or June to early or mid October, so confirm the exact dates with Nova Scotia Provincial Parks before driving out. Outside that window the gate may be closed and services shut, though the beach is often reachable on foot from the road. Day use generally follows daylight, with the busiest period from late June to Labour Day. Lifeguard cover, where offered, is limited to the summer weeks and the posted hours (confirm). Storms in autumn can damage boardwalks and close sections of the shore with little notice.
