Riverboat Discovery

Family Run Sternwheeler Cruise · Fairbanks, Alaska

A sternwheeler cruise on the Chena and Tanana rivers in Fairbanks, run by the Binkley family, who have piloted riverboats here since the 1950s. The three-hour trip on the Discovery III mixes Interior Alaska life with scenery: a bush pilot takes off and lands a float plane beside the boat, the crew stops at the riverside kennel founded by the four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher, where sled dogs show their speed, and passengers visit a recreated Athabascan village where Alaska Native guides demonstrate fish wheels, smoking salmon and fur and beadwork. It is one of Fairbanks' most popular summer attractions. For 2026 the boat sailed from 11 May to 19 September, departing at 8:45 AM and 2 PM.
