Robert Frost Farm
National Historic Landmark And State Historic Site: The Farm In Derry Where Robert Frost Lived From 1900 To 1911 And Found Much Of The Material For His Early Poems, With A Nature Poetry Trail Along Hyla Brook. · Derry, New Hampshire
A modest white clapboard farmhouse with an attached barn on Route 28 south of Derry, where Robert Frost lived with his young family from 1900 to 1911, farming poultry, walking the fields and writing poems that would later make his name. Frost is quoted as saying the core of his work came from these Derry years, and many of the images in his first books - a mended stone wall, a brook that runs dry in June, mowing in the field, the woods at the edge of the pasture - are traced to this land (confirm specific poem links). After he left, the farm passed through other owners and at one point was surrounded by a junkyard, before the state bought and restored it with help from his daughter Lesley, who described the rooms as they were. It is now a National Historic Landmark and a state historic site, with the house furnished to the Frost years and open for guided tours in the warm months. A nature-poetry trail follows Hyla Brook through the woods and fields, with lines from the poems posted along the way, and summer readings keep poetry alive on the lawn.
