Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach
State Park · Malibu, California
Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach is a group of three small pocket beaches on the bluffs along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, Los Angeles County: El Pescador, La Piedra and El Matador, which together form the park. Each is reached from a small lot on the highway by a path or stairway down the bluff (confirm the layout). Tall sea stacks, rock arches and shallow caves stand on and near the sand, and El Matador is the one most often described for its sea arches. The beaches are small, and the lots are tiny and fill quickly, so parking is the real limit. Photo shoots and weddings are common (confirm any rules). Tides decide how much sand you get, and rip currents and large waves make swimming risky. Leo Carrillo State Park and Point Mugu State Park lie farther along the coast as separate parks. Plan for a short, steep climb back up, bring your own water and snacks, and keep a close eye on the tide.

These beaches are open 8 AM to sunset, and California State Parks has long kept them as day-use only with gates and lots that close at the end of the day - confirm the posted hours, since staffing and seasons can change them. Each of the three beaches has its own small lot on the highway, and they can fill well before the posted opening time on a warm weekend. Sunset is the busiest time for photographers, and high tide can cover most of the sand at any hour, so check a tide table before you plan your visit. Fog is common on summer mornings along this coast, and winter storms can close the stairs.
