Rocamadour

Cliffside Pilgrimage Village Of Chapels And Houses Stacked Above The Alzou Canyon In The Lot, A Stop On The Way Of St James · Rocamadour, Occitanie

Rocamadour is a medieval pilgrimage village built in layers up the side of a limestone cliff above the Alzou canyon in the Lot. At the bottom is one long street of old houses, shops and restaurants. Above it, reached by the Grand Escalier, a long stone stairway that pilgrims once climbed on their knees, is a cluster of chapels and a basilica wedged against the rock, known together as the sanctuary. The Chapelle Notre-Dame holds a small dark wooden statue of the Virgin, the Black Madonna, which has drawn pilgrims since the Middle Ages, and a sword said to be Durandal hangs in the cliff outside. At the top, a château and ramparts look down the valley. The village is a stage on one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. Paid lifts link the levels for those who cannot climb. The best view is from the hamlet of L'Hospitalet across the canyon, especially at dusk. Summer brings serious crowds, and the village is best early, late or out of season.

The village street, the stairway and the outside of the sanctuary are open to walk at any time and free. The chapels and basilica are open daily in daytime for visits and prayer, with services that take priority over sightseeing; visitors are asked to stay quiet or wait during Mass. The lifts between the village, the sanctuary and the château run daily through most of the year with longer hours in summer, may stop for maintenance and usually do not run late at night; confirm before relying on them. The ramparts at the top keep daytime hours and charge a small fee. Shops and restaurants on the main street keep long hours in summer, and a good number close for part of winter or on midweek days. Paid car parks sit at the foot of the valley and on the plateau at L'Hospitalet, and fill by late morning in July and August. Pilgrimage feasts, especially around the Assumption in mid August and a pilgrimage week in September, bring extra services and crowds; confirm dates. Evening visits are quiet, and the village is lit up at night.
