National Natural Landmark · Minneapolis, Kansas

A five-acre field outside Minneapolis, Kansas, holding about two hundred Dakota Sandstone concretions — spheres of cemented sandstone up to twenty-seven feet across, left standing when the softer rock around them eroded away. It is a National Natural Landmark, there is nothing else like this concentration anywhere, and the whole thing is run out of a shed by a small local board that charges a few dollars and lets you climb on them.
