Rock City Gardens
Rock Formation · Lookout Mountain, Georgia
A trail threaded through a maze of enormous sandstone blocks on the Georgia side of Lookout Mountain, opened in 1932 by Garnet and Frieda Carter, who then advertised it by paying farmers across nineteen states to let them paint SEE ROCK CITY on the roofs of their barns. Around nine hundred barns were painted and a few hundred survive, which is why the name is familiar to Americans who have never been within five hundred miles of it. The walk ends at Lover's Leap, where the claim is that you can see seven states, and continues into 1940s black-light dioramas of nursery rhymes that nobody expects.
